EV & HV Safety Training

EV & HV SafetyFull day$595 + GST per personAuckland · Wellington · Christchurch

Hybrids and EVs are already coming through your workshop. This course gives your technicians the knowledge and the discipline to work safely around high voltage, and the habit of verifying instead of assuming.

What you'll learn

  • How HV systems are laid out, from the pack through the inverter to the motor, and why you follow the orange before you lift, cut, weld or drill
  • How inverters and traction motors work, and why a DC-only reading proves nothing past the inverter
  • The four hazards: electric shock, arc flash, stored energy in capacitors, and the fact that nothing looks live
  • Battery chemistries in the NZ fleet (NiMH, lithium-ion types, and what's coming with sodium-ion and solid state) and why they change the risk
  • When to stop work and quarantine a damaged or suspect pack

Working safely

  • PPE that actually protects you: the liner, rubber and leather glove system, and air-testing gloves before every use
  • CAT III meters, insulated tools, the HV tester and the rescue hook
  • The eight-step safe isolation sequence, and live–dead–live meter proving
  • Why pulling the service disconnect splits the pack but doesn't make it dead

In the workshop

  • HVIL interlock loops and diagnosing HV isolation faults
  • Charging, towing and roller brake testing on EVs, and coolant servicing
  • Reading a manufacturer's emergency response guide
  • Electric shock emergency response and first aid
  • Your duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015

Hands-on

  • Inspecting and preparing PPE and measuring equipment
  • Correct HV measurement technique, and AC versus DC readings on a meter and scope
  • A full vehicle power-down, with zero energy verified and recorded
